HOME: Bumble Cottage, Brimming with history, character, and charm

Brimming with history, character and charm, many of you may know Bumble Cottage as it stands proud in Rustington village, on the corner of Broadmark Lane and Bushby Avenue. This exceptional thatched house, built in 1878 has had many an occupant over the time, and it might come as a surprise that the cottage is not grade listed, however this has meant that owners have been able to bring it shining into the 21st Century, with it having undergone complete renovation and extension while still maintaining that important character feel.

We spoke to the current owner about her own experience with this prominent property, discussing everything from the first viewing to present day.

 

Jan: “Having been a regular visitor to this area since my childhood. I introduced my husband to Rustington in 2009 while on holiday down here. We spotted Bumble Cottage in an estate agent's window during another trip. We fell in love with Bumble the moment we walked through the door. We moved in in 2010. It was home.

We have been made welcome by so many people here in Rustington. Especially during the time after my husband passed away in 2013 during the work on the cottage. Kindness and neighbourliness are a truly wonderful feature of this village.”

Engineered oak flooring runs throughout the ground floor, heated from below, yet zoned for energy efficiency. Within the living space, there are clearly defined areas for formal dining and relaxed seating around the fireplace. 

 

“The extension work has enhanced the cottage”

 

Jan: “As well as the fireplace many of the walls and beams are original from when the property was built all those years ago. It is amazing to be living in a piece of history, and this was an important consideration when planning for the work on the house. 

The inspiration for the renovations was to rejuvenate an already special cottage whilst maintaining it's charm and warmth to those lucky enough to call it home. The extension work has enhanced the cottage by adding light and modern amenities without taking away the scale and charm of the original. Ours is just the latest transformation that each of Bumble's caretakers have made to such a warm and cosy home.

 

“It would be hard to pick a favourite part”

 

“It would be hard to pick a favourite part of Bumble. The garden is a true scented cottage garden complete with a resident hedgehog who often parades her family across the grass in twilight. The big glass doors opened early in the morning at sunrise to listen to the birds singing. The mezzanine is perfect for crafts and quiet relaxation with an over view of the living room.”
