How To Express Pride in Your Interior Décor

Dating back to 1972, Pride UK has been established as the premier event in the LGBTQ+ community calendar. The annual parades are a spectacle of colour and celebration of the LGBTQ+ community highlighting visibility, unity, and equality.

To celebrate 50 years since the first pride event and also Worthing Pride, we have teamed up with local interior stylist Gemma Gear. As a self-proclaimed ‘maximalist’ her home is bursting with colour and vibrancy, making her best placed to give you tips on how to express pride in your interior décor.

We spoke to Gemma to gain insight into her tips and tricks to do just that.

What would be your top tip to inject colour into your home?

I always say to clients who are wanting to be a bit more adventurous in their homes with colour & pattern to start off with smaller accessories. Cushions/throws are a great example of items that you can easily play around with without breaking the bank. Mix and match accessories and soft furnishings until you have a colour combo that you love, then when you’re happy with your choices you can become more adventurous with bigger statement pieces like rugs or window dressings.

 

What would be your one piece of advice for someone wanting to feel proud of their home?

Don’t get too caught up in the latest trends or what’s ‘hot’ and what’s not! At the end of the day, you’re designing your house for YOU, so it needs to be filled with things that bring you joy and happiness. It doesn’t matter if you have an eclectic taste in different trends because that in itself creates your own unique style. With that comes the confidence of being proud of what you have created.

 

How have you managed to incorporate so many colours in one space without the colours clashing with one another?

Each room in my house has a completely different feel and aesthetic, yet they all have one thing in common – an abundance of colour and clashing! I think because it’s a theme that’s carried out throughout the whole house it has created a cohesive style and therefore makes it feel purposeful. Each colour has equal amounts in every room which is why nothing feels out of place. For example, if my living room was predominantly blue, then a bright yellow cushion would seem out of place, but because yellow is also incorporated in accessories and books, it works in the room.

 

What item most reminds you of Pride in your home?

My rainbow wreath! I absolutely LOVE it and it’s one of my proudest creations. It hangs above my mantle in the living room and makes me smile every time I look at it.
