Celebrating Women in Property for International Women’s Day 2022

Women represent our business in every department and at all levels, including apprentices, negotiators, commercial specialists, new homes experts and company directors. Since Tuesday 8th March is International Women’s Day, it gives us a most fitting opportunity to celebrate our good fortune at having so many incredible women working across the company.

What is International Women’s Day (IWD)?

Let’s turn to the official website for all-things IWD, since it explains it best:

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific.

IWD is close to our hearts (as are the great women we work with), and we’re proud to have strong women leading the way at Michael Jones. We also recognise that more needs to be done to accelerate the gender equality across the board, which is why this year’s theme for IWD resonates so well…

IWD theme for 2022: #BreakTheBias

Deliberate or unconscious, bias against women makes it difficult for them to move ahead in their careers (or any other part of life). But knowing that bias exists isn’t enough – only by taking action can we level the field.

We asked five inspiring women from around the business a different question to find out what inspires them to reach their goals, how they aim to get there, what makes them most proud and any advice they have for other women.

Hayley Scammell
Lettings Director

How did you start your career in property?

I actually started years ago now on a ‘young workers scheme’ at Hewitts Estate Agents – earning just £25 a week!

My career progressed resulting in me setting up a successful lettings division with Bacon & Co in 1990. After the birth of my second child, I become a director and my position continued when we merged with Michael Jones.

I’ve always worked hard to succeed and overcome any challenges. Good communication, hard work and serious determination have taken me where I’ve wanted to go. Building trust with your clients and offering sound, honest advice is a key platform for success.

Senior Commercial Negotiator

What are you most proud of in your career?

Taking on a new challenge. When I started, I knew very little about commercial estate agency, but I was excited to be given the chance and I ran with it. Over 3 and a half years later, I’m still here as the only Senior Negotiator and enjoying every moment of it.

I originally started out in sales, but I’m always looking at ways to branch out and push myself career-wise. Upskilling and taking risks are important to me, and I love the fast-paced nature of the Commercial property sector. You also get to build important long-lasting relationships with businesses far and wide. Wouldn’t trade it for anything!

Elise McKinnon - Michael JonesElise Mackinnon
Lettings Negotiator

Do you have a life/work motto?

“Fortune favours the brave! I live by it, because I believe in the idea of taking risks in business and life. Sure, they should be measured in some way and not so crazy they’re reckless. But I think the idea of sitting by and playing it all safe would mean lots of missed opportunities.

I started with my apprenticeship here [at Michael Jones], and I wanted to learn something I considered outside of my comfort zone. Well, not ‘comfort zone’ exactly, but certainly a different career path I hadn’t considered before.

Without that ‘why not!’ moment, I wouldn’t be here working with people who inspire me. I love the industry and am really enjoying progressing in my career!”

Angela Brockwell - Michael JonesAngela Brockwell
Branch Manager, Ferring

What are your goals for the future?

“To support and inspire my daughters to work hard and have successful independent lives and careers. I want them to see that as a girl or woman, you can be whoever and do whatever you want in your personal life and in your work.

That doesn’t mean I expect them to become top earning, highly flying execs (though nor would I mind!). It’s more that I want them to know that whatever they want to do, they can – and that so long as where they end up is fully their choice, their want or desire, that they know they succeeded for themselves.

Ultimately, I want what a parent wants, really! For them to be happy and safe and free to make their own choices and not feel held back by anything or anyone.”

Juliette Hedges
Senior Negotiator

It’s an unfortunate truth that the property world has traditionally been male dominated. With the gender split still resting at around 85% men vs 15% women, what useful advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a career in property?

“Don’t be put off and just do it for yourself! The industry is unbalanced, but don’t let that stop you. Then more women who join the industry, the more equally represented we’ll become.

Look at where we work, and the team split across all departments. Just under half of the Michael Jones team are women. That’s amazing! There’s probably about 10 more guys working here than there are women, but against that average industry statistic? Well, we’re showing how it should and can be done.

Aside from the work itself, which I love, it’s the equal opportunities here that help motivate me. I mean, I’d have that drive regardless, but it really helps when you don’t need to fight an uphill battle to be recognised for your hard work, not your gender. I’m proud to work for a company that’s against the mainstream of the industry and making serious strides in proving things can change.”

We have just sold our house through Michael Jones with Dominic acting as our agent. We had excellent service, were kept up to date with progress, all questions answered promptly and the Dominic was regularly in touch with the buyer, particularly … More as his solicicitor was very slow and on one occasion unproffessional, which moved the sale along. Very happy overall and would throughly recommend Dominic and Michael Jones.
