HOME: Wendy Ann 2 – A British Harbour Tug Boat

The first in our new feature series ‘HOME’ – where we speak to our vendors and gain an insight into their homes. It seemed only right that our first article be this glorious tug boat.

A British Harbour Tug Boat built in 1939 for service in Plymouth, which has since been de-engined, fully rebuilt and lovingly restored. This is a big moment for Michael Jones – being the first boat we have ever had on the market.

Located to the West side of Littlehampton Harbour on the bank of Rope Walk, this home is perfectly secluded by the sea and is literally off-grid, giving you an idyllic and unique setting to call home.

We speak to the owners to gain an insight into what their lives on the board have been like and their inspiration behind taking on this extraordinary project.

What made you fall in love with the boat and decide to make this your home?

We were living in London and were offered a ludicrously low mortgage. This led us to develop an idea for an alternative lifestyle in an unusual home and living on a boat was, therefore, an obvious choice.

Dutch barges were out of the question in terms of the purchase price and the opportunity to convert a workboat looked interesting. Tugs have loads of character, like a giant bath toy, and once de-engined, from a practical view they have plenty of space inside.

What was your inspiration behind the restoration & refurbishment?

“Corbusier’s phrase ‘A machine for living’.”

Le Corbusier a controversial Swiss-French Architect suggested that this phrase expresses how houses are tools we use to live and we happen to live inside them. This quote continues to state “An Armchair is a machine for sitting in and so on”, highlighting the functionality that our homes provide, that perhaps sometimes gets overlooked.

In contrast and “strangely” as Becky puts it, “the films Chocolat and Moulin Rouge have also influenced [their] design.”

This highlights the boat having a romantic and tranquil feel while also adopting French interior design which could be described as ‘perfect by being imperfect.’

What was the biggest hurdle you came across during the project?

“Despite thinking we’d done our research; we bought a beautiful and historic but also very broken vessel. It took three and a half years and a huge amount of dedication, hard work, and learning to rebuild just the hull, but we did everything to MCA standards so she has a completely new bottom.” (If you pardon the pun!)

What is your favourite thing about the boat?

“The 360 degree view from the wheelhouse, especially at sunrise and sunset.”

Being completely on your own, your light & sight are not blocked by neighbours, meaning you really do get the sunshine and a view all day long.

The boat is completely off-grid, which to some may seem daunting but what would you say are the pros to this?

“It IS cheaper. Running costs in summer are close to zero, but the boat runs on fuel in the winter. The vessel has almost complete autonomy. If she needs to move for whatever reason everything will still function.”

Using solar power and other renewable energy sources, this boat is paving the way for a more sustainable way of living and powering your home, which now more than ever is important.

Do you have any hopes for another project?

“We don’t have any plans to take on a new project right now, but never say never.”

We have just sold our house through Michael Jones with Dominic acting as our agent. We had excellent service, were kept up to date with progress, all questions answered promptly and the Dominic was regularly in touch with the buyer, particularly … More as his solicicitor was very slow and on one occasion unproffessional, which moved the sale along. Very happy overall and would throughly recommend Dominic and Michael Jones.
